The volume calls for a deeper understanding of ageing in society. It begins with theories on gerontology and the way the aged can benefit from them. Based on a field study involving the elderly from different castes and religious groups in rural and urban areas, it points out that religion, community and institutional stay have a direct correlation with the empowerment and disempowerment process of the aged.
