Synopsis North East India, comprising the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura has a unique physical personality, characterised with great ethnic and cultural diversity. Despite fifty years of Independence, it is surprising that not even a single comprehensive account of this geo-politically important region is available. Based on seven volumes, one for each state, the Encyclopaedia of North East India deals with the physical setting, history, people, society, demographic attributes, code of values, agriculture, irrigation, industries, education, languages, literature, places of interest, and the overall cultural ethos of the region. Thus there is hardly any aspect of habitat, economy and society of the region which has not been covered in the present series. Meticulously edited by well known social scientist, documented with reliable data and supplemented with a comprehensive bibliography, there is much in these volumes that gives the readers the background to understand the contemporary political and socio-economic processes and the instability in the North East India.
