The volume deals with silk and sericulture in South Asia, focusing on Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Myanmar, India, Bhutan and Sri Lanka. With maps and other illustrations, it deals with silk of all five varieties of silk moths found in the region. Studying the literature on silk and silk-related statistics, it gives the history of sericulture in South Asia and cultural role of silk particularly weaving in the countries and presents examples of variations in pattern and designs of silk fabrics in the region. With illustrations comprising a mixture of old prints and modern photographs, it examines various types of silk moths in the region and the silk manufacturing process and life of workers, taking up the countries individually for study to discuss weaving today.
