The Development of Imperial Gupta Brahmi Script

Synopsis The palaeographic study of the script used in North India during the period of imperial Guptas is the subject matter of the present work. This script was derived from the Brahmi script used in the majority of the edicts of Asoka and developed during the later seven centuries. Three sections are identified for the study. Inscriptions on stone, terracottas and copper-plates from the major section. Coin legends have been treated separately. Similarly the numerals have also been given separate treatment. The text contains the background tracing the developmental stages of Brahmi script from the time of Asoka; inscriptions from, North Indian style : Kausambi region' Eastern Indian style" region of Bengal and Bihar; Western style : Mathura region; Malwa style : Madhya Bharata; and also script on coins and numerals. As regards the arrangement of plates the method evolved by Dr. T.P. Verma (B.H.U.) has been followed.
