Betrayal of North East: The Arrested Voice

Synopsis

Betrayal of North East, The Arrested Voice” depicts the extraordinary story of an IPS officer who was jailed under the National Security Act on fabricated charges and dismissed from service. Hiranya Kr Bhattacharyya invited the ire of the government for being vocal against certain government policies, especially its weird reluctance to check illegal immigration from Bangladesh which has destablised the region with far-reachings implications for national security. Years later, the Supreme Court set aside the dismissal and granted him post-retirement benefits. His brilliant career was abruptly brought to an end in 1981 after twenty three years in service during which he had successfully accomplished many undercover operations in Assam under instructions from the Centre including the training to two batches of the Mukti Bahini (of Bangladesh) during the War of Liberation. These apart, the book is a vivid description of the varied socio-political phenomena witnessed and experienced by the author for almost eight decades that takes into account his bitter experiences as a political activist as well and active role in facilitating the peace process between the government and a section of the banned ULFA.
