Synopsis Assertive Democracy : Transition in Yugoslavia—Selected Documents seeks to collect in a single volume analyses, documents and news reports about the events in and concerning the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia since the beginning of 1999 till December 2000. The developments that this volume covers have not only changed Yugoslav and Balkan politics drastically but also impact with yet unpredictable implications on international relations and international law. It chronicles and analyses the NATO bombings and examines the advent of the doctrine of humanitarian intervention superseding the traditional concept of national sovereignty. As the analyses and documents bring out repeatedly, the questions raised by the events since the beginning of 1999 will take a long time to be answered conclusively. The principal idea behind the volume, therefore, is to empower the reader to raise those questions and seek credible answers to them.
