Synopsis To say that the theme "Libraries and Information Centres as Profit Making Institutions" of the book is a burning issue is stating the obvious. This is because libraries and information centres were seen as conservative non-profit making organisations with traditional values and time-honoured practices. But this outlook seems to be changing due to the challenge of change--social, technological, economic and political changes--on the one side, and the pressure for accountability and the emergence of enterprise culture on the other. Consequentially, the slogan on everyone's lips has been "Self-sufficiency" (financially) and/or "User pays" principle and "Profit-making". Thus, the need of the hour is for libraries and librarians to think of income-earning or resource/revenue generation and/or cost recovery activities.
