Synopsis
The present work an Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Freedom Movement is the fifth publication under the ongoing series An Encyclopaeidc Dictionary of Indian History and Culture and it aims at being a handy reference manual for understanding the saga of Indian freedom struggle. The story has epic dimensions and is liable for more than one interpretation. Although India lost to the British at the battle of Plassey in 1757, it never gave up the continued to fight for its independence. The so-called Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 was the first war of independence. The years between 1876 and 1884 proved to be the seed time for Indian nationalism which took a definite shape with the formation off the Indian National congress in 1885. By and large, the Congress party spearheaded the freedom movement, which culminated in partition of the country and independence in 1947. The present study is divided into four sections dealing with historical perspectives, the proper dictionary of freedom movement containing more than four hundred self-contained compact entries arranged in an alphabetical order, chronology of major events and dates and an exhaustive bibliography of more than two hundred titles on the subject matter.
