An Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Ancient Indian History (2700 BC-1192 AD)
Synopsis
The present work An Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Ancient India is the second publication under the ongoing series An Encyclopaedic Dictionary of Indian History and Culture. It aims to be a handy reference manual for understanding the different aspects of Indian history and culture from the dawn of civilization to the year 1192 when the last Hindu ruler Prithviraj Chauhan was defeated by Muhammad Ghori at the second battle of Tarain. The book is divided into four sections. Section One deals with the history of India since early times. It deals with the geography of India, Indian Palaeolithic age, the ascendancy of the Magadha, campaigns, of Alexander, the Mauryan empire, and finally the history of northern India from AD 300 to 1200. The section provides a rapid survey of ancient Indian history and serves as a background. Section Two, the Dictionary contains about four hundred entries drawn from the diverse areas of ancient Indian history and culture such as administration, architecture, arts, battles, concepts, customs, dynasties, events, language, literature, movements, personalities, philosophy, politics, religion, science, scriptures, sects and sculpture. While Section Three describes major dates and events of ancient India, Section Four furnishes an exhaustive bibliography of more than two hundred titles covering the entire subject matter.
