Synopsis The book is a serious attempt to look at profitability of Indian farming in the rural environment in the state of West Bengal, India. West Bengal is agriculturally a dynamic state with significant changes taking place from time to time in cropping pattern, technology and government policies. As is the case in other states of India, agriculture in West Bengal is also dominated by small and marginal farmers with all inherent constraints for growth and prosperity. Since farming is the main occupation, it should provide sustenance to them. Further, it assumes special significance in the context of WTO and its implications on Indian agriculture.
