Synopsis Whether Gandhi is called the Man of the 21st Century of a Man of the Millennium it is an irrelevant. Infact he is "man beyond the millennium", along with socrates, Buddha, Jesus and other prophets of humanity. Gandhi's uniqueness lies in the fact that he was a saint among politicians and a statesman among saints. The new millennium needs a leader who is both a saint and a fighter. But his saintliness is not meant only for his own salvation but for the service of the lowliest and the lost. Man becomes great exactly in the degree in which he works for the welfare of his fellow-men. His spirituality was in action and in society. Then as a fighter, he would not tolerate any injustice but on the other hand would not hurt his opponent. Today, war has become antihumanity because we have invented the instrument of total annihilation. Gandhi therefore discovered the "moral equivalent of war.
