History of Velama Kingdoms: Rachakonda and Devarakonda

Synopsis

There has been lot of research on history of Andhra but very few historical studies on Telangana. The dynasties like the Satavahanas, Kakatiyas, Qutubshahis and Asafjahis whose capital was in Telangana and extended their boundaries to entire Telugu speaking areas, sufficient research went on and lot of books are available. But in the case of Ikshvakus. Vishnukundis and Velamas who ruled entire Telangana with their capital cities in Telangana, their histories are neglected and there are no serious historical works.

The present book on The History of Velama Kingdom (1323 A.D. to 1475 A.D.), a period that witnessed the rise of larger regional state powers than earlier. These included the kingdom of Velamas, as well as the Bahmanis, Vijayanagara, Gajapatis, Reddys and Later Gangas. In this book I made an attempt to work on Velama Kingdom who ruled entire Telangana Rachakonda and Devarakonda as their capitals. In 152 years of their rule in Telangana, they established several new features and separate identify to Telangana. In their rule they laid 56 inscriptions in deferent parts of Telangana used as primary source for this book. Several temples and tanks constructed during their rule still using in Telangana. Telugu language views flourished during their reign and several books written are Bogini Dandakam. Bhagavatham, Simhasana Dvatrisimhaka which are unique books to understand the later medieval Telangana. Another important aspect is Velama kings ruled without any internal conflicts from Rachakonda and Devarakonda as their capitals successfully. They untidily fought against Bahamanis, Vijayanagara and Reddys during the expeditions architecture, they followed the Kakatiya styles. Initially they patronized Shaivism and later days they shifted to Vaishnavism. The biggest Narsimha Swamy temple constructed during this period at Rachakonda. Umamaheshwaram, Aionavolu and Kandikonda etc., temples constructed and also renovated during their rule. 152 years of Velama rule in Telangana flourished in all aspects and given unique identity to our region.
