Since ancient times, Varanasi (also known as Banaras or Kashi) has been the center of culture and knowledge, and has cultivated various aspects of faith, spirituality, art, craft and music. Located on the banks of the Holy river Ganga, the city with its ghats, narrow streets and shops—and in these narrow lanes innumerable small and big temples—attract devotees, scholars, tourists from all over the world. INTACH has undertaken extensive heritage documentation and conservation initiatives in Varanasi in the last 35 years which has led to the publication- 'Iconic Heritage of Banaras' (English) and ‘Banaras ki Anupratik Dharohar’ (Hindi). This book covers a detailed documentation of 100 iconic heritage buildings in the town and is an effort to weave the diverse aspects and mysteries of architecture with the tales and anecdotes of this ancient living city.
