The Red Fort of Shahjahanabad

Synopsis The Red Fort and the city of Shahjahanabad built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the seventeenth century have both undergone radical transformation. This richly illustrated book is an architectural biography of the evolving place and city. It offers an engaging narrative of how life was lived within the Red Fort, set against the backdrop of the Mughal period and the geographical area of Delhi. Using the extant monuments of the Red Fort, in conjunction with maps, photographs, court chronicles, travelogues, and other historical material, the author takes us on a journey through time. Tracing the development of the palace complex, she describes the evolution of its different buildings, their renovation and reconstruction over the centuries, and the changes wrought by its successors, including the British. In doing so, she recreates for readers the original spaces and functions of the Fort. Written by an architect specializing in the conservation of historical sites, the book provides important suggestions for conserving the Red Fort and other such historical sites, where built and open spaces are inseparably integrated. Beautifully laid out with over 300 black & white and colour photographs, charts and maps, the book will be valued by general readers, informed tourists, conservation professionals as well as scholars of architecture and art history.
