Synopsis The Volume presents the food security and nutrition problems of the country in general. In spite of plethora of anti-poverty programmes now being implemented throughout the country, incidence of poverty and malnutrition prevails in almost all states of the country. About one-fourth of our population in general is afflicted by the chronic crisis of food insecurity. Different authors of the volume made state-specific, gender-specific and group-specific analysis of the per capita food availability and the role of Public Distribution System. The present state of PDS among the APL and BPL population in different states, with particular reference to north-eastern states, has been examined on the basis of field study. Remedial measures for improvement of PDS have been suggested. Supply side issues for augmenting food production and organizational and infrastructural problems for food management have been discussed.
