Economic Thinking in India
Synopsis
This book deals with the ideas of economic thinkers of India since ancient times. As there was not much material available in this field when the work was started the original works of many authors had to be consulted. The book is divided into five parts. Part I deals with ancient economic thinkers, and the two most important thinkers of that period are Kautilya and Sukra. Part II deals with medieval economic thinkers among whom are included Ala-ud-din Khilji, Mohammad Tughlaq, Ferozshah, Shershah and Akbar. Part III is devoted to earlier modern economic thinkers, and among these are included the ideas of Dadabhai Naoroji, M.G. Ranade, D. Wacha, R.C. Dutt, G.K. Gokhale, N.M. Joshi and P.N. Banerjea. Part IV deals with recent economic thinkers. From a lart number of thinkers of this period the ideas of six economists belonging to these different schools are discussed in details. They are V.G. Kale, Brij Narain, M.K. Gandhi, J.K. Mehta, K. T. Shah and R.K. Mukerjee. Part V is concerned with collective economic thinking, i.e. the thinking of various political parties including governmental thinking. The author concludes that although most of the political parties and individual economists advocate for planned economic development, few look into the difficulties of implementation of plane in a democratic set up, which require serious thinking from a different perspective.
