What America Did for India's Independence

Synopsis India was not alone in its fight against British imperialism and colonialism. In the total context of India’s freedom struggle, the moral, political and material support of many other countries such as Chine, Japan, Burma, France, Germany, the Soviet Union et al, can also not be ruled out. Above all, it was the United States of America that extended generous support to India’s freedom movement. While the Administration’s policy followed a roller-coaster track, the American Congress, public and the media rendered liberal assistance. During the course of his numerous visits to San Francisco over the past 15-20 years, the author discovered it an important support base for India’s freedom struggle. Its neighbouring centers of academic excellence, Universities of Stanford and Berkeley, proved irresistible sources of inspiration for this work. Numerous sources spread over a couple of centuries, have been consulted for this book. No doubt some literature covering America’s contribution to India’s freedom struggle is already in the international market. While it covers the American aspect fairly comprehensively, it follows two extremes: it is either excessively pro-American, or it goes in the opposite direction as much as it runs down the positive facet of American contribution besides imputing derogatory motives in some cases. Both sides lack in integrating in Indian political point of view and events, and their impact on the international scene. This book shall fill that gap.
