The papers in this volume, presented at a seminar organised by north east India council for social science research, attempt to explore the status of education in north east India and its role in the development of the region. They address a range of issues concerning elementary, secondary and higher education, adult education, distance education and women education. Tracing the reasons for failure to achieve the target of education policies, the contributors try to relate the social and economic development with the expansion of education in the northeast. The role of voluntary associations in educational development is also analysed. The book will be useful for teachers, researchers, students, policy makers and development agencies.
