Synopsis Japuji is the fundamental sacred text of the Sikh faith. Emanating from the spiritual vision of Guru Nanak (1469-1539) this text enshrines the essence of his God-consciousness and the 'steps' commended to the seeker for ascent towards Realization and 'Liberation'. The earnest student of Indian religious thought shall find in this text much that is in consonance with the highest reach of the spiritual experience of our land. Withal, in Guru Nanak's teaching is to be found the vision of a vast humanitarian gospel, passionately devoted to truth and inculcating a compassion without limit or confine. Towards the close is the ecstatic expression of the experience of Divine Grace. While there are in existence a number of renderings of Japuji into English, generally they leave one with a sense of dissatisfaction because particularly of their failure to suggest the vision and imaginative reach of the original. Its comprehension and transmission is rendered all the more difficult because of its highly compact expression. In the present rendering and commentary, guidance and insights provided by the great savants from Bhai Gurdas onwards and by Gurubani itself are made use of.
