Synopsis The present work, embodies investigations regarding the origin and homeland of the Gurjara-Pratiharas. These two important and relevant questions are discussed in detail, and an indigenous origin, as also the homeland in the neighbourhood of Mount Abu is proposed for the Gurjara-Pratiharas. The history of the Gurjara kingdoms of Mandor, Broach and Kanauj are considered in detail and in a wider perspective with their relations and tribulations with which the Gurjara-Pratiharas-as known from their records-passed, and their long-standing conflicts with the Palas and the Rastrakutas, called the tripartite struggle, are annulled in detail. The mighty rule of Bhoja and Mahendrapala stemming the progress of Islamic power in India is portrayed in its proper setting. The Pratihara power rose in its turn and attained distinction as the supreme power in the North. Besides the political history in detail, covering several chapters, administration, social and educational life, as also economic and religious conditions in the period are fully brought out on the basis of available source material, including works of Rajasekhara. There are several appendices including the listing of inscriptions, coins and monuments associated with the Gurjara-Pratiharas, with a rich bibliography and an index. As pointed out by a reviewer, 'It seems reasonable to expect no further advance to our knowledge of the subject until the archaeologist comes to our aid by means of excavation of Kanauj and other ancient sites'.
