Synopsis Most of the studies on the problem of the children in India discuss their problem at the macro level in the perspective of the country at large. The present volume enjoys the distinction of being one of the earliest to make a study of the children in the state of Bihar. The book provides painstaking analysis of the child situation not only at the state level but also at micro level of a village and a district. The author has brought out the fact that the bulk of rural children live in the condition of social and economic deprivation. They are caught in the vicious circle of poverty, ignorance and illiteracy. To ameliorate their condition the author has made a number of recommendations. For destitute children which constitute the most deprived section of the children, the Government of India provides ameliorative and curative services through voluntary organisations.
