Synopsis Followed traditionally. Advent of virtual classrooms and video-desktop technologies promises interesting possibilities of teaching and learning at anyplace, anytime and anywhere. Today, a shift in education is becoming evident where more responsibility is being placed on the individual for his or her learning, instead of solely on the teacher. Subsequently, the teacher’s role is also changing. Education is becoming lifelong learning and training process, developing transferable skills and knowledge that can be applied to competitive markets, where knowledge and information is being traded as a commodity. Educational institutions around the world are being forced to compete globally, by engaging in entrepreneurial activities to sustain themselves in an uncertain and competitive world. Countries are no realizing the economic potential and value of technology in education. The digital technologies challenge conventional conceptions of both teaching and learning methods and materials and, by reconfiguring how teachers and learners gain access to knowledge, have radical implications for conventional teaching and learning processes. To meet these challenges, education systems must embrace and implement technology into their schools to produce citizens capable of living in the twenty first century where technology is encroaching more and more into everyday life.
