Synopsis Language is an essential component of normal development for all humans. Unfortunately, exposure exclusively to spoke language usually is not very successful for deaf children who have more severe prelingual hearing losses. While it is important for parents to strongly support deaf children's spoken language, it should not be to the exclusion of sign language.
