Synopsis Primitive man moved from place to place in search of food. Even today a certain proportion of humanity finds it necessary to migrate. The reasons for migration are various, but the major one is still the search for economic betterment: food, clothing and shelter. The search for a better life impels men to travel varying distances, even to other countries. Kamaljit Singh’s investigation into the phenomenon of migration in all aspects is based on field studies carried out in Punjab during 1986. His analysis of rural-urban, inter-and intra-district, inter-State and international migration covers the linguistic, cultural, educational, demographic, and socio-economic aspects. Many of his findings need to be taken into serious consideration by planners before the situation in the rural areas becomes explosive and rural development turns regressive.
