Sufis and Sufism: Some Reflections
Synopsis
Sufism, particularly in pluralistic Indian social context connotes syncretism and tolerance. Emerging simultaneously during the early centuries of Islam, it travelled to Indian subcontinent with profound impact. With devotionalism and cloistered hermeticism already an integral part of the life cycle, India offered a very fertile ground for the evolution of the principles that guided the path of the Sufi saints. The evolution of Sufism in medieval India also coincided with the rise of the bhakti movement. Both the schools had a complimentary impact on each other. A number of scholarly volumes have been written and compiled on this area of social history, and the present volume seeks to fill some of the gaps and offer new light in the already existing researches on Sufi saints and their paths. Though the papers do not form a specific theme yet reflections in the articles provide a new look to our understanding of some of the obscure aspects.
