Synopsis This volume is the outcome of the first ethnographic survey of the Nicobarese people, living in the Great Nicobar Island, the farthest and the southernmost land mass in the Bay of Bengal on the one hand and the Indian Ocean on the other. The cultural pattern of the tribe who are scattered over twelve Islands are undergoing rapid changes owing to cultural contact with the outer world. The members living in the Great Nicobar Island, the remotest and most inaccessible one compared to other Islands, still could preserve most of their traditional customs and practices because of isolation. The empirical findings not only portrays the way of life of the people but also deals with the demographic aspects, the surroundings and the mode of adjustment and adaptation of the people with their immediate ecological milieu. It is thus not simply an ethnographic account but a timely and much needed document of a simple society.
