Synopsis Living entities (Biodiversity) exhibit variation at a whole hierarchy of levels; of molecules, genes, cells, individuals, populations, communities, ecosystems, landscapes and biomes. Interest in biodiversity has recently gone up with the emergence of new possibilities of putting biodiversity to human use by applying techniques of molecular biology. Biodiversity, the library of life, is on fire. We must extinguish this fire before even more treasures, yet to be discovered, are lost beyond recovery. It is therefore an important task to increase our knowledge by means of research and scientific cooperation between nations. Sustainable development means development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Thus 'Sustainable Development' becomes a goal not just for the developing nations, but for industrial ones as well. Sustainable development distributes the benefits of economic progress more equitably, protects both local and global environments for future generations and truly improves the quality of life.
