Synopsis NGOs or NGDOs are basically voluntary organisations other than cooperatives, Self-Help Groups (SHGs) etc. Voluntary organisations, known for their virtues of human touch, dedication, great initiatives, self-reliance, contextual innovations, flexibility, togetherness with community and ability to reach the masses in the most effective manner are now considered partners of government in its all endeavours concerning needy, poor, children and women and their environment. Of late, it has been noticed that some NGOs are proving to be self-centred instead of mass-centred which these ought be. The present compilation discusses some pertinent issues highlighting NGOs in India, e.g. emergence, growth, role and performance appraisal.
