Synopsis Plants are the basis for thee Earth’s ecosystem and food web and, without them, complex animals life forms could never have evolved. They are unique amongst the eukaryotes, organism whose cells have membrane-enclosed nuclei and organelles, because they can manufacture their own food. Chlorophyll, which gives plants their green colour, enables them to use sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugar and carbohydrates-chemicals the cell uses for fuel. The study of cells, molecules and molecular reactions in plants have always been a topic of interest to biologist and biochemists.
