Synopsis In Indian society the status of women has changed from time to time. In ancient India, women enjoyed equal status with man in all fields of life, she received the same education like man. During the medieval period, the status of women went down considerably. The position of women in modern India has changed considerably. Today her position is equal to that of men, socially, economically, educationally, politically and legally. India was one of the first countries in the world to give women the right to vote. The Indian Constitution is one of the most progressive in the world, and guarantee equal rights for men and women. Despite the advances women have made in many societies, women’s concerns are still given second priority almost everywhere. They continue to face discrimination and marginalisation, both subtle and blatant and do not share equally in the fruits of development. This book analyses the issuers of women’s freedom and gender equality in the Indian society. It is hoped that this book will reach to many women and men –teachers, health professionals, lawyers, political leaders, media professionals, human rights workers –who can act and inspire others to act on many of the issues that have been raised. It is only through such concerted public action that women’s freedom and equality will move from being words to become reality.
