Synopsis This book, which concentrates, in the forties of the twentieth century deals with four major socio-political issues of the decade namely : a. The Second World War and its impact on the Muslim psyche; b. The Bengal famine of 1943 and Muhammadan endeavours in alleviating distress; c. The rise of Muslim Communalism culminating in the demand for Pakistan by Muhammad Ali Jinnah and the Muslim League; and d. The Muslim views on the freedom struggle lunched by the Indian National Congress. These issues are studied in the back-drop of four major Muhammadan festivals, namely the Eed-ul-Fitr, the Eed-ul-Adha, the Eed-Miladunnabi and the Muharram, as published in the festival numbers of a leading Muslim daily newspaper of the 1940s, The Morning News. Besides the above, detailed probes have been made on the social and cultural significance of these festivals, together with the philosophy connected with them. Descriptions of these festivities are furnished at random to give an insight into the Muslim minds celebrating them in Calcutta and other parts of the country and the world.
