Military and Media

Synopsis Military-media relationship has been subject to perennial debate for over two centuries now. advent of the media and subsequent proliferation of media networks stymied military’s almost peerless role. Recent decades have witnessed transformation in the classical missions of the military from merely defending the ‘territory against alien invasion’, to that of the ‘operations other than war.’ Media’s omnivorous appetite for open access to defence-related and battlefield information in view of military’s insistence on preventing disclosure of classified or sensitive information on one pretext or the other have usually culminated in thorny relationship between the media and the military which stems from the dichotomy of interests involved. This book examines the paradigms of military-media relationship in the global context from historical as well as contemporary perspectives, and use of media as an instrument of psychological warfare. It presents an anatomy of media-military relations in the Indian context, both during war as well as peace times, with special emphasis on media’s role in tackling the problem of terrorism in Punjab, North-East region and Jammu and Kashmir. While laying emphasis on coexistence of military and the media in India, views of leading former military personnel, defence and strategic experts as well as leading media personalities are also presented to help forge cordial, friendly supplementary and complimentary relationship between them.
