Synopsis Tourism in rural areas represents a potential panacea for many of the effects generated by globalisation. It influences resultant internationalisation of culture ad consumption patterns. It also represents a panacea for the host communities, many of whom face uncertain futures in the post-modern world. It has to balance values, wants, desires, realities, fantasy, the values of the past and the demands of the present.
