Synopsis Hugo Munsterberg was the first social scientist at Harvard who sought to merge the Protestant orientation of American philosophy, psychology, and sociology with German positive and experimental science. In doing so, he affirmed an independent social utility for science in a way that emphasizes positivism’s essential assumption that social “causes” exist, are discoverable by objective experimentation, and can be rationally utilized to construct a better society.
