Synopsis Accelerating urbanization is powerfully affecting the transformation of Indian society. In numerical terms, India’s urban population is second largest in the world after China, and is higher than the total urban population of all countries put together barring China, USA and Russia. Urban centres present tremendous opportunities for all people, including the poor. Cities are important vehicles for social and economic transformation in India.
