Synopsis The Asiatic Society of Mumbai was founded by Sir James Mackintosh in November 1804 and started its journal, the Journal of the Bombay Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1841. This makes it the second oldest surviving institution, and the Journal, the second oldest surviving periodical of oriental studies, being preceded only by its parent Society in Kolkata, which was founded by Sir William Jones in 1784 and its journal, the Asiatic Researches, which started publication in 1789. The Journal of the Asiatic Society, Mumbai, being published continuously for over one and a half centuries -- though under different titles -- carries useful material on practically every academic discipline. In this comprehensive Index an attempt has been made to provide an easy guide to this vast storehouse of knowledge, especially in the fields of humanities and the social sciences. The Index covers articles, reports, book reviews, obituaries and illustrations published in the Journal's pages between 1841 and 2001. Divided into two parts -- the first giving a volume and yearwise history of the contents, and the second a subjectwise listing of the articles -- the Index attempts to cover the contents of the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bombay from various angles for the convenience of the researcher and also the lay reader.
