Synopsis This book is about the weavers of West Bengal, about their avocation, heritage, culture and tradition carried on since the days of antiquity. Developed as a labour intensive industry, handloom weaving in Bengal all through its existence not only provided one of the basic requirements of civilized living but in course of time also came to be known as the products of high excellence. During the entire existence, the industry has survived a series of onslaughts. The weavers of Bengal who carry the tradition and heritage have always made it possible to tide over the crisis. The Author visited different places of production throughout the state, and to the different expositions held from time to time as well as to the rural markets for a first hand idea about what is produced, how they are produced and marketed and also about the life and living of the people who make things possible.
