Synopsis Prof. Pande’s present work Consciousness Value Culture is a sequel to his earlier works Meaning and Process of Culture: A philosophy of History and Mulyamimamsa. It incorporates and carries forward their investigations into Value, Culture and History. It seeks to outline a philosophy of culture as the social and historical expression of the inner value seeking character of consciousness. It may also be alternatively described as a search for a Philosophy of History. Religion and Social ethics, philosophy and art are integral dimensions of culture. The manifold ways of Life and Thought, which make the fabric of culture can be explored by participant observation, historical enquiry, the hermeneutic exploration of symbols and the dialectic of self-consciousness. History is the process by which self-consciousness actualizes itself in soc8ial time. The present work argues that the attempt to understand culture in some specific historical self consciousness. At the same time the attempt to understand the meaning of history tends to show the inadequacy of merely contingent facts and the need for discovering the ideal principles, which are dialectically given in self-consciousness and illumine the realms of culture. Consciousness, value and culture are at once temporal and timeless, a flux which, reflects eternity.
