Indian Agriculture: Issues and Prospects

Synopsis Agriculture includes cultivation of the soil, growing and harvesting crops, breeding and raising livestock, dairying, and forestry. Modern agriculture depends heavily on engineering and technology and on the biological and physical sciences. Irrigation, drainage, conservation, and sanitary engineering-each of which is important in successful farming-are some of the fields requiring the specialized knowledge of agricultural engineers. Agriculture, which employs (with forestry and fishing) about two-thirds of India's workforce and make up 25 per cent of the country's GDP, remains the most important sector of the economy. Most land is farmed in very small holdings; the average holding in the mid-1990s was about 1.5 hectares (less than 4 acres). About half the land in India is cultivated by farmers owning more than 4 hectares (more than 10 acres). The issues the prospects related to agriculture especially sustainable agriculture has been discussed in the present book and thus, we hope that the present work will be of immense importance to those involved in related sectors.
