Synopsis Fertilizers are responsible for 50% crops yield increases in recent times. The continuous use of high levels of chemical fertilizers is adversely affecting the sustainability of agricultural production and causing environmental pollution. In coming decades, major issue in designing sustainable agriculture system will be the management of soil organic matter and the rational use of organic inputs such as animal manure, crop residues, green manures, compost and biofertilizers in an integrated manner.
