Intellectual Property: Global and Indian Dimensions

Synopsis The evolution of the World Trade Organization after immense discussion over 8 years has generated great interest the world over.  The first round proved to be marked different from the earlier rounds.  The present book deals with "Intellectual Property" which was a critical area in the negotiations.  As we all know before the WTO, this important area was dealt with by the Paris Agreement (1863), Berne Convention (1886, Madrid Agreement (1891), Universal Copyright Convention (1952), Rome Convention (1961), Geneva Convention (1961) & IPIC Treaty (1989).  Even though these agreements & conventions had excellent ideas, they lacked the capabilities for implementation.  The need was, therefore, felt for a much tougher & disciplined agreement.  The TRIPS agreement, Dispute Settlement System also were a great attraction.  There was a lot of misunderstanding between the developing and developed countries but it is a matter of great satisfaction that eventually there was clear understanding & TRIPS come into being.  The author has taken great pain in collecting the judicial verdicts, not only from the WTO but from all over the world.  Lot of work has been done on classification of the countries.  Many other critical issues like linkage of regionalism with bilateralism and multilaterism have been examined in great depth.  The other issues like investment, economic growth, small industries and nanotechnology etc.  have all been carefully analysed.
