International Competitiveness and Knowledge-Based Industries in India
Synopsis
In the past decade, emerging economies like China, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand have grown as important players in the international market for knowledge-intensive industries such as electronic hardware. India's export basket however, continues to be dominated by low-technology goods which are highly price sensitive, low value-adding, and slow moving. The challenge for India is to strengthen the international competitiveness of knowledge-based industries, to upgrade the technology profile of her exports. This book analyses the international competitiveness of India's exports through an empirical analysis covering a sample of more than 4000 enterprises. A detailed study of five key knowledge-based industries--electronics, pharmaceuticals, chemical, automotive, and non-electrical machinery--provides an in-depth coverage of the issue. The focus is on corporate strategies such as scale of operations, technological dynamism, multinational affiliation, and outward investments. The volume advocates a strategic approach to enhance export competitiveness of enterprises in India and outlines policy lessons for the government, industry bodies, and enterprises. It will interest policymakers, industry specialists, analysts, researchers, and students of industrial economies and development studies.
