This encyclopaedic study has been weaved into four volumes covering various aspects of the region through its ages.  The highlights of the theme are socio-economics, cultural and political developments through the ages.  Undoubtedly all these volumes have been dealt with in a comprehensive way.  Indeed all the events are well-knit and give useful details on the subject.  Volumes I to IV cover the land and the people and all useful details which are meant for teachers, social scientists researchers, parliamentarians, statesmen and students in India and abroad.  Efforts have been made to fill up gaps with the help of writings of eminent authors.  We are grateful to them.
