A Stranger in Paradise: The Story of an Extraordinary Civil Servant

Synopsis As advisor to the Governor of Jammu and Kashmir Mohandas Moses was inspired by the Kashmiri poet Kalhana’s Rajatarangini and began writing a book on Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh titled Rajatarangini Revisited on the past and present of the troubled state. After his departure, Achala Maulik, civil servant and author, wrote about Mohandas Moses using the material he had left behind.  Stranger in paradise is about this extraordinary man who had remarkable achievements to his credit, who was a dedicated civil servant, a scholar and loved adventure, who never surrendered his ideals n the rood to success. His life is powerfully and poignantly told by a woman who shared his dreams and dangers. The reader will see the predicaments of the Indian bureaucracy set against the panorama of the nation’s progress. A large part of the book is a dramatic account of how normalcy was restored between 1994 and 1996 to the blood stained and strife torn paradise of Kashmir. She tells this story with insight, sympathy and humour. The descriptions of Jammu and Kashmir including, their cultural traditions and heritage and their present aspirations makes this book unique.
