Synopsis The Atlas India : Environmental Status is designed with all the States and Union Territories of India with a scale range from 1:250, 000 to 1:1,000,000 and other suitable scale according to the shape and size of the landmasses. Apart from general information a long list of sensitive zone delineating parameters is shown in the reference boxes. These include forests, land use, biosphere reserves, tribal areas, heritage sites, places of tourist interest, hill resorts, monuments, places of religious importance, major industrial sites, areas of specialized skills, markets, major cities and urban agglomerations, educational centers, critically polluted areas, flood prone areas, earthquake prone areas with seismic co-efficient values, areas with endangered habitats, oil towns and oil refineries, major irrigation projects etc. The general category of information include administrative boundaries with headquarters, other physiographic information like rivers, canals, lakes, springs and a detail network of communication systems like roads, railways, navigation systems etc. This atlas will help the regulatory bodies, different departments of the Government, industry, public and private sector enterprises, the academic institutions, the researchers and scholars, concerned in environmental protection as well as to take stock of the status of environment in the country by the new millennium.
