Synopsis The concept of empowerment must necessarily be seen in linkage with the choice for women to control their lives and make choices not only within households but also at the societal level. For poverty to reduce and influence society it is necessary that structures and opportunities be equitable and fair. The book is structured to bring out some key areas of gender concern-slums, health and sex ratio. Spread in three distinct parts, it deals with the three key areas, even as all along a deep relation exists in all the three elements of concern. The study has drawn conclusions from a methodical collection and analysis of information and data presented in table form for an easy understanding. For a state like Haryana that is ranked at the top of the economic development chart in the country, the picture that emerges from other social and gender development indicators is clearly dismal.
