Synopsis The area of "technical services" in modern-day academic library has undergone radical redesign and reorganisation. The implementation of integrated library systems, shrinking budgets, new electronic formats, the advent of internet, and technological innovations have drastically changed the face of "technical services" units presenting new challenges, such as finding and hiring qualified cataloguers; dealing with the exponentially expanding range of print and electronic formats; reorganising workflows due to staff reductions; and trying to find answers for organising and describing information in its various manifestations. The purpose of this volume, therefore, is to describe the different "technical services" and to orient the students with the procurement, processing, preservation, and handling of documents. It is further to familiarise them with problems in the technical operations and with current thinking related to solving them in the best possible way. The study indicates the methods that have been used in studying the technical operations highlighting the use of automation, internets, and digital technology. For anyone involved in the day-to-day supervision, management, and future of a library technical services department, this study will provide food for thought, and solution of complex problems.
