Synopsis Education is a vast subject with multiple facets and ‘Understanding Education’ deals with some of these. While drawing from the views of the scholars from different countries, the authors have related to the Indian conditions and referred to the Indian tradition, culture and ethos. From kindergarten to adult education, from teachers’ role to parents’ responsibilities and from innovative teaching to distance education, the book has something novel and original to say on a variety of topics. Education has been dealt with in four distinct compartments of education for literacy, education for awareness, education for skills and education for knowledge. The authors have put forward a view that a secular country like ours has the advantage of teaching the ethics, values and morals from all the religions whereas a country patronising a religion cannot go outside the tenets of that single religion. The book advocates an amalgam of ancient wisdom and modern knowledge in all spheres of education and a mix of periodical assessment and year-end examination for testing the achievements of the students. It makes a strong case for giving a place of high esteem to the noble profession of teaching.
