Portrait of Anthropological Research
Synopsis
Indian anthropology is the gift of British colonialism. British anthropologists and scholars tried to understand social system of the so-called 'other cultures'. Until 1947 there was a wide belief that anthropologists were concerned only with the study of primitive or tribal people. After independence with the introduction of anthropology in many Indian universities and academic institutions, interaction of anthropologists with foreign scholars, growing interests of the foreigners specially American and British anthropologists in studying Indian society and culture, anthropology is no longer confined to tribal study. Even then tribal studies contribute an important dimension to Indian anthropology. Anthropology nowadays expands in horizons and draws attention on several aspects like crafts, tourism, human genetics, Dalit studies, community development, gender issues and so on. Against the backdrop of the same in the present volume title "Portrait of Anthropological Research" treatises contributed by a number of anthropologists and other social scientists are put together into scholarly quest for understanding some aspects of Indian anthropology.
