Synopsis Nearly all the artistic remains of ancient India are of a religious nature, or were at least made for religious purposes wrote, A.L. Basham. Secular art also existed. Kings dwelt in sumptuous palaces, decorated with lovely wall paintings and sculptures, though many of these have vanished. There is no doubt that much has been written on Hindu art, architecture and culture through the ages. Our aim in writing this volume is to provide to our readers some thought provoking and interesting essays. In selecting the material, effort has been made to include course contents for the use of students and the teachers.
